Battle of the Atom part one and two came out today, and to kick off the comic book event of the year, (well… the event of the year for X-Men readers…) Brian Michael Bendis did a signing with David Marquez and Michael Avon Oeming. Three talented and intelligent guys. I had the chance to meet them and get some signatures, and they were all delightful. Before the signing began, Brian did a Q&A with the group. He had lots of great insights on the industry, writing and, of course, that creative brain of his! I was able to ask Brian about his success with writing diverse and powerful women. He has proven time and time again to be both skillful and respectful when writing women, and I know for some men that seems to be a challenge, so I wondered if his women were created with the intention of being something more than pinups, or if it just happens to be a natural talent he has. He said that first and foremost, when he writes, he spends a good deal of time thinking about the characters and how they would truly act in the situation. He strives to do right by the characters, and creating stereotypes is certainly not the way to do that. Furthermore, he said that the women in his life have been a great inspiration to him. With daughters and a wife at home, and Kelly Sue Deconnick as one of his best friends, he said that women and how they are handled is pretty regularly on his mind. Good on you Brian! Thank you for creating women everyone can love, and thank you for putting time into giving each character the attention they deserve! As for Battle of the Atom parts one and two… I could not be more pleased and impressed. The name Brian Michael Bendis has become a staple in great Marvel crossovers and world shattering events, and once again he lives up to his name. If you have not been reading All New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men, I strongly recommend reading them, or at the very least google searching them, before picking up Battle of the Atom. I don’t want to give too much away, but with BotA parts one and two, Brian is really taking his time to tell the full story. There are some great moments to laugh at from Iceman, and there is plenty of tension to keep the reader engaged. (Not every issue needs to be packed with epic fights! Writers… Take note of Brian’s ability to create tension and conflict without rushing into a battle!) In the two issues, we get to see how the X-Men of the past, present and future are dealing with all being in the same place. While some are able to keep their cool, others react in a less than productive way. The best part for me was when I FINALLY got to see who the woman in bandages was! (POSSIBLE SPOILERS IF YOU THINK HOW I THINK! I have been wondering about her since the first pictures were leaked. I had a theory, and I was right, but now a whole slew of other questions have now arisen. END OF SPOILERS.) But that’s all I’m going to say about her right now… Go read it for yourself! Trust me. It is worth your time.

lgndofzelda asked: What's your favorite video game??

My favourite video game is Portal 2! Although I am also in love with both of the Left 4 Dead games, Fallout 3 and the Assassins Creed games, (not including #1 which I felt got incredibly repetitive…) I still haven’t gotten a chance to play Bioshock Infinite which breaks my heart because I was so looking forward to it… But I’ll get to it eventually and I know it will be great!

So you want to start reading comics…

As a comic lover, I have no problem picking up new things, giving #1 issues a chance and hopping into long running series at places that seem reasonable. But what if you’re new to the comic book world and you don’t know where to start?
Getting into comics may seem daunting… What do I read? Where do I start? What is good?… But there are a few simple steps you can take toward comic reading that are SO easy.

1. Find a local comic book shop and ask the owner what you should read. Obviously each person will have a different answer, but you can bet they know their material. They will most likely ask you what kind of thing you want to read. (Remember… There are ALL kinds of comics. Superheroes, fantasy, sci-fi, horror, comedy, mystery ect… Go into the shop knowing what sorts of things interest you.) From there the shop owner can guide you toward what is good, popular and/or new.
2. If you know you want to read something specific… Just do a little research! Jumping onto long running titles can be intimidating because you don’t know the history. No problem! If you want to start reading an X-Men title… Just wiki search X-Men, read about the history of the Marvel Universe, and check out the trade paper collections for the more recent title runs! (For instance… I know All New X-Men has a couple new trade papers out. I also know that All New X-Men has been an excellent run so far. Go research what happened before All New, and then just hop on!) It can be a little bit of work, but don’t feel like the only way you can ever start reading an X-Men series is by starting ALL the way at the beginning…
3. Another great way to get introduced to excellent titles is by checking out nominees for comic book awards. The biggest comic book award out there is the Eisner award. (click here for a list of the nominees…) If you look at who was nominated, that can give you a good idea of some quality stuff to check out! Another good comic book award is the Harvey Award. (For a list of the nominees go here —> http://www.themarysue.com/harvey-award-nominees/ ) Please note that Hawkeye, Saga and Revival come up on both lists… It’s because they’re all awesome… Go read them all…

Comics are an excellent art form and I would love to see more people getting excited about them. Give them a chance and I’m sure you’ll find something that you love! If you ever want to know my opinions on what to read… Just ask. ;)
